PASADENA, Calif.— With continued urgent repair of Eaton Fire-impacted facilities, along with systematic extensive testing confirming drinking water quality in remaining impacted areas, Pasadena Water and Power (“PWP”) is further updating the Do-Not-Drink-Water Notice initially issued January 8, 2025, and updated January 13, 2025. PWP and the State Water Resources Control Board ("SWRCB") have further confirmed safe drinking water quality in additional areas previously under the Do-Not-Drink-Water Notice. As PWP has its own operations and construction crews, along with its own certified water quality lab, PWP continues to quickly bring back online impacted facilities and perform subsequent water quality testing, confirming safe drinking water in those areas.

Areas that remain under the Do-Not-Drink-Water Notice are advised to not drink or cook with the tap water. Attempting to treat, boil, freeze, filter or add chlorine or other disinfectant to the water will not make it safe to drink. The update to the Do-Not-Drink-Water Notice reflects a further reduction of impacted PWP water accounts to approximately 4% of service connections impacted. PWP is committed to providing safe, reliable drinking water for all customers. PWP water crews are working around-the-clock to confirm the safety of the drinking water for impacted customers who remain under the Do-Not-Drink-Water Notice. The city of Pasadena has declared a local public health emergency a week after the Eaton Fire caused widespread destruction.

Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) Acting Health Officer, Dr. Parveen Kaur, declared the emergency due to the impacts of the wildfire and the particulate matter that is still circulating through the community.

Firefighters have made progress in containing the Eaton Fire but the air quality in the impacted areas remains a concern for health officials. Since the start of the fire on Jan. 7, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued multiple smoke and windblown dust advisories for the unhealthy and hazardous conditions.

Ways to limit exposure to wildfire ash:

Health officials are concerned the leftover ash and debris could cause future risks to safety, health and the environment.

The PPHD wants residents to take necessary steps to protect themselves from the toxic ash and debris. The agency is proactively positioning the city to access county, state and federal resources.

The PPHD is distributing free personal protective equipment to people who have been impacted by the Eaton Fire at 450 N. Lake Ave.

City officials have also issued a temporary leaf blower ban to limit residents from stirring up the toxic ash. That ban will remain in effect until further notice.

California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the County of Los Angeles along with other state and local partners, are opening two Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, January 14th at 1:00pm.

As California has experienced an unprecedented hurricane-force firestorm, Cal OES has led the efforts to respond to and recover from wildfire impacts. Involving nearly every part of state government, the work now turns to recovery where Cal OES, state agency staff, federal and local partners work to help fire survivors get back on the road to recovery following the wildfires that began on January 7, 2025.

At a disaster recovery center, residents and business owners can apply for federal assistance and access other available resources from local, state and non-profit agencies. These can include learning about disaster assistance programs, find housing and rental assistance information, meet with state agency representatives, and get help from non-profits.

MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION

On Wednesday, January 8, President Joe Biden quickly approved Governor Newsom’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to support ongoing response efforts. Late last night, the state also received continued federal assistance to combat the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades Fires. On Tuesday, January 7, Governor Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency.

PASADENA, CA — People affected by smoke from the Eaton Fire were advised Thursday by the Pasadena Public Health Department to remain indoors and avoid outside activities to prevent smoke and ash inhalation.

With wildfires posing a serious health concern for older adults, pregnant women, children and people with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, the department encouraged residents to take precautionary actions, according to Lisa Derderian, Pasadena's public information officer.

Some of the steps to assist with preventing smoke and ash inhalation include:

-- Shutting all windows;-- Turning off vents to the outdoors;-- Using portable air cleansers or purifiers indoors;-- Reducing physical activity;-- Wearing a well-fitted respiratory mask, gloves, long-sleeve shirts, and long pants while cleaning up ash;-- Avoid skin contact with ash and immediately wash it off if it comes into contact with your skin, with caution that some wet ash can cause chemical burns;-- Monitoring children and young adults and not allowing them to play with ash or be within proximity of ash-covered materials;-- Cleaning ash off pets;-- Seek immediate medical assistance if you are experiencing chest pain, tightness, or shortness of breath.

According to Derderian, the smoke from wildfires contains fine particles that irritate the lungs and heart when deeply inhaled, and emphasized that a high concentration of these particles can result in a persistent cough, runny nose, phlegm, wheezing, labored breathing, and eye irritation.

"Urban wildfires can lead to potentially greater risks to health because they often release more toxic pollutants due to the burning of synthetic materials like plastics and metals found in buildings," Derderian said in a statement.

"People who must work outdoors for long periods in areas with heavy smoke or where ash is present should wear a well-fitting N95, P100, or P110+ organic vapor respirator mask."

Derderian said that individuals with lung or heart complications should consult a physician before using a respirator, as wearing one can sometimes cause difficulty breathing.
