REDONDO BEACH, CA - With Los Angeles County’s annual Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count fast approaching, Redondo Beach officials are looking for volunteers.
The massive count, which covers over 4,000 square miles, is scheduled to start on Jan. 21 and will travel throughout the county until Jan 23.
The massive undertaking will require thousands of volunteers split into 8,000 shifts throughout the count. Volunteers will be split into groups of four to “tally the number of unsheltered individuals, tents, vehicles, and make-shift shelters they see in their assigned census tract,” according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.
Locals can register to volunteer at this link. Individual volunteers will be paired with teams, or volunteers can register in groups. Volunteers are generally needed for between three and four hours, including a brief training. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
"Last year's Homeless Count marked the first decrease in street homelessness that Los Angeles has seen in years," said LAHSA CEO Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum. "As we gear up for this year’s count, community support is crucial. We need thousands of volunteers to join us in counting our unhoused neighbors so we can better understand where they are, the services they need most, and what it will take to bring them home."

In 2024, the LAHSA opted to provide breakdowns per service planning area, or SPA, rather than a city-by-city breakdown. In SPA 8, which includes the entire South Bay from the Harbor Area to El Segundo to Inglewood, a total of 5,428 people were counted as unsheltered in 2024.
Redondo Beach made headlines last year after the 2024 count revealed the city achieved Functional Zero Street Homelessness. To achieve Functional Zero, the number of people placed in housing must be greater than the number of people who became homeless over a six-month period.
“The community of Redondo Beach, in partnership with local governments and the state, is stepping up and showing what is possible when we all work together to address homelessness,” said Governor Gavin Newsom of the achievement.
Last year’s homeless count estimated there were 75,312 people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County, a 0.27 percent decrease from 2023, according to LAHSA. Last year was the first time the county's homelessness fell in years.
The results of this year’s count will likely be released in late spring or early summer 2023.

He started flipping burgers from a griddle set up on his driveway to make a living during the pandemic, and now former PR business owner Matthew McIvor is continuing to smash the burger business as he gets ready to open a second location of his popular burger joint, Proudly Serving.
“We’re super excited but super nervous at the same time and I definitely see the challenges because we’ve been super busy, so it’s a good challenge to have,” said McIvor, who is expecting his latest brick and mortar location for his smash burger restaurant to open in Redondo Beach by early January at 1617 S. Pacific Coast Highway.
His restaurant specializes in smash burgers made by pressing on the patty when it’s placed on the grill to intensify the flavor. The menu at the new location will include some of his hit burgers like The Founder, made with a double patty with cheese, raw onions, pickles, yellow mustard and ketchup as well as the PS Burger, another double patty with cheese, griddled onions, pickles and special sauce.
The upcoming 60-seat restaurant, which is opening in Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village, will also serve his new Juicy James burger, made with a double patty with cheese, lettuce, tomato and bacon on a sesame seed bun.
“We’re adding that one new burger in Redondo and we’ll have milkshakes and soft serve there eventually,” he said.
McIvor started his burger business by setting up a griddle on his driveway after the pandemic forced him to go from running a PR agency to flipping burgers in order to make a living. His burgers were a hit and he operated as a pop-up for more than a year before taking over the kitchen and sharing a space with the Project Barley brewery taproom on Redondo Beach’s International Boardwalk in 2022.
He left that space about a year ago to open his first brick-and-mortar 60-seat restaurant at 110 Second St., in Hermosa Beach. The new place quickly gained a following which led to McIvor’s decision to open a second location and he wants to keep expanding with plans for more burger spots in Orange sometime next year as well as a food truck.
“We have some pretty lofty goals ahead of us,” McIvor said.

“It does create that neurological shift that can produce happiness,” Psychologist Deborah Serani, a senior professor at New York’s Adelphi University, told NBC’s “Today” show. “I think anything that takes us out of our normal habituation, the normal day in, day out ... signals our senses, and then our senses measure if it’s pleasing or not.”

If you’re including a video, please upload it to YouTube and send us the link so we can embed it (make sure it's marked “public”). We also request that the homeowner submit their own yard or a close relative.
We’ll keep updating the list for LA County throughout December.
Once you've provided the information — and submitted a photo or two or a video (after you uploaded it to YouTube) — you will be entered and included in our roundup.
Pro-tip: If you haven't photographed your light display before, a good time to take photos is at dusk.
IMPORTANT: By submitting a photo, you're giving Patch permission to publish it for this feature and future stories. Photos should be original and taken by the person submitting the photo.
